Our approach engages rigorous research, sound evidence, and human-systems thinking to ensure responsiveness to organizations’ complex dynamics and stakeholders, and their distinctive needs. We prioritize the identification and implementation of gap-closing practices and policies to create conditions for organizations, groups, and individuals to thrive. To achieve this, IEE draws upon outcome mapping as the primary method of research design  (20 years of outcome mapping, 2021). This methodology enables us to focus our work holistically and strategically on understanding the “missing middle” between inputs and outcomes. Three basic premises serve as anchors for outcome harvesting: 1) Social, policy, and system change are contingent upon changes in human behavior. 2) Individuals ensure their own wellbeing when they have the knowledge, skill, and opportunity to influence and contribute to decision making. 3) Sustained improvements in people’s lives or environments depend on authentic relationships between diverse people, groups, and institutions in systems.  Based on these premises, we prioritize coming to consensus in partnership with our clients regarding their urgencies and aspirations. Together, we design inquiry processes that produce actionable insights grounded in evidence and found to be responsive to the "missing middle."
